Three-Day Immersive Basketry Course: Frame Creel with Lid and Leather Strap
September 22nd, 23rd and 24th September 9.30 til 4.30
Wood and Willow Workshop, Froghall Wharf, ST10 2HJ
Level 3 course
For experienced basketmakers ready to deepen their craft, this three-day intensive workshop offers the rare opportunity to design and construct a frame basket creel — complete with a fitted lid and handcrafted leather strap.
This creel is a beautiful and practical object — ideal for dog walks, foraging or a handbag. This course will take you through the full process of building a strong, well-balanced frame basket from scratch, from a hazel and willow frame. We will on precision, proportion, shaping and finishing.
Over the three days, you’ll:
- Construct a frame using naturally curved hazel and willow ribs.
- Start the frame off, using thin and flexible willow. Create pockets and add ribs to give the shape of your basket.
- Weave the basket using finely prepared willow or other flexible rods, paying close attention to even tension. Using packing to fill in the basket to keep an even weaving pattern.
- Build and attach a close-fitting lid, with options for simple hinges and fastenings
- Fit a handmade leather strap.
This is a hands-on, focused, and rewarding course designed for those with previous basketry experience (particularly in willow or frame structures) who want to challenge themselves with a more complex and finely detailed piece. The setting is peaceful and rural, allowing space to slow down and immerse yourself fully in the rhythm of making.
All materials, tools, and equipment are provided. Tea, coffee and biscuits provided. Please bring lunches.
