One-day beginners basketmaking course: Fruit Basket or gathering basket

Saturday 14th November – 9.30 – 5. Cost £90

Wood and Willow Workshop, Froghall Wharf, opposite Hettys Tea Shop. Foxt Road, Froghall, Staffs.

Please arrive at 9.15 for a 9.30 start – you can contact me on 07779121031 if there is an emergency or you are going to be late.

Join us for a hands-on, creative one-day workshop where you’ll craft your very own shallow tray-style fruit basket, perfect for carrying bread, fruit, or simply as a beautiful home accessory. Alternatively you could make a sweet little mini foraging basket with a plain, pegged handle to collect all your foraging spoils, nuts, berries or for holding spoons or eggs in the kitchen. A useful little basket you will keep picking up and using.

We will make round bases, add stakes and using a weave called waling, work up the sides and  weave a simple border. Forage basketmakers will then add a plain handle and peg in place. Suitable for beginners and intermediates.

This course is ideal for beginners and early-intermediate basketmakers who want to learn the fundamentals of basket construction, with the opportunity to create a stunning, practical piece.

Over the course of the day, you'll be guided through every step of making your basket:

·       Round base construction: Learn how to weave a strong, even base — the foundation of your basket.

·       Choosing stakes & setting up: Select the right willows and learn how to stake up the basket, setting the framework for the weave.

·       Weaving: Explore different weaving techniques to form the body of your basket, with tips on achieving even tension and a smooth, professional finish.

·       Weaving the border: Add a sturdy border around the top of your basket to keep everything neatly in place.

Throughout the workshop, you will work with beautiful, home-grown colourful willows from my own willow beds, along with Somerset willow, giving you a rich palette of shades to work with. You’ll also receive individual support and advice tailored to your project, ensuring you leave with a basket that’s both functional and beautiful.

I’ll provide drinks and delicious biscuits throughout the day, and if you have any dietary preferences or restrictions (such as dairy-free or gluten-free), please let me know in advance so I can accommodate you. Please bring along your own lunch and a mug for your drinks.

The workshop can be cold so please wrap up warm.
